Building a Giant Angora Grow-Out Chart Together

A first step toward tracking real Giant Angora growth data

One of the questions that comes up often with Giant Angoras is, “How big should they be at each age?” And the honest answer is… we do not really have one universal, official Giant Angora grow-out chart.

There are commercial meat-rabbit growth benchmarks that can be helpful as a comparison tool, but Giant Angoras are not selected strictly for meat production. They are a beautiful, wool-producing breed with their own growth patterns, coat development, frame maturity, and line differences.

So instead of treating meat-rabbit numbers as a hard rule, I think we can use them as a starting point. And even better? We can begin collecting real Giant Angora data together.

Using meat-rabbit benchmarks as a comparison tool

Many extension resources use general meat-rabbit growth targets such as around 4 pounds by 8 weeks, around 5 pounds by 10 weeks, and fryer or roaster weight ranges as production guides.

For example, some commercial rabbit references list goals such as:

  • 4 pounds live weight by 8 weeks

  • About 5 pounds by 10 weeks

  • Market fryers around 3½ to 5½ pounds at 8 to 10 weeks

  • Roasters around 5½ to 9 pounds under 5 months

Those numbers are very helpful for comparison, but they should not be used as a strict expectation for Giant Angoras.

Giant Angoras are different. Wool growth, frame development, litter size, feed, heat, mothering ability, and individual lines can all affect the growth curve.

Senior weight goals for Giant Angoras

For Giant Angoras, I like to keep the senior minimum weights in mind as the long-term goal.

At 8 months of age, the minimum senior weights are:

  • Bucks: 9.5 pounds

  • Does: 10 pounds

That gives us a final target to work backward from, but the path to get there may look different from litter to litter.

My simple rule of thumb

  • By 8 weeks, I would love to see a promising Giant Angora around 3 to 4 pounds.

  • By 12 weeks, I would like them around 5 pounds, give or take.

  • By 4 months, I would like them around 6½ to 7 pounds.

  • By 6 months, I would like them around 8½ to 9 pounds.

  • By 8 months, bucks need to be 9½ pounds or more, and does need to be 10 pounds or more.

Again, this is not meant to be a hard-and-fast rule. It is a practical place to begin.

How I plan to use this chart

I would not use this as a hard culling chart, especially not at first.

Instead, I would use it as a tracking and comparison chart.

  • A small litter of 3 or 4 may grow like gangbusters and blow past the numbers.

  • A large litter of 10 to 12 may start slower but still catch up beautifully.

  • A hot summer litter may grow differently than a cool spring litter.

  • A great mother with plenty of milk can make a huge difference.

The chart is helpful, but the notes behind the numbers matter just as much.

What information would be helpful to track?

To build a more useful Giant Angora grow-out chart, I think the most helpful information would include:

  • Birth date

  • Litter size born

  • Litter size weaned

  • Weekly weight through 12 weeks

  • Monthly weight after 12 weeks

  • Feed notes

  • Mother notes

  • Final 8-month weight

  • Final body and type notes

When we collect this information over time, we can begin to see real patterns. Not just guesses. Not just borrowed meat-rabbit numbers. Real Giant Angora data from real Giant Angora breeders.

Let’s build this together

Later this month, I am expecting a whole slew of new litters here at Fuzzy Vaughn’s Farm. With these upcoming babies, I plan to start tracking their growth rates more carefully so we can begin building an actual Giant Angora grow-out chart based on real Giant Angora data.

It will be interesting to see how our numbers compare with the meat-rabbit growth references above.

I would love your input, especially from those of you who already track weights or have noticed growth patterns in your own lines.

This first draft is only a starting point, but I think we can make it much stronger together.

And who knows? With enough shared data, we may be able to create a truly helpful Giant Angora grow-out chart for breeders, exhibitors, and future fuzzy families.

Whee! Let the baby weighing begin.
