Giant Angora vs English Angora: Choosing the Right Angora Rabbit for Your Goals

Updated: Mar 24

Hey you guys,

Every spring, I start hearing the same question over and over again…

“Which Angora rabbit should I get?”

And I get it. This time of year, is full of adorable babies, fluffy faces, and a whole lot of excitement. It’s really easy to fall in love quickly.

But here’s the truth… even though Angoras all look like little clouds of fluff, they are not all the same. Not even close.

In my newest video, I sat down and walked through the differences between Giant Angoras and English Angoras, along with a little bit about French and Satin Angoras as well. And while I go into much more detail in the video, I wanted to take a moment here to slow things down and talk through the bigger picture.

I also mention German Angoras in the video, because they are such an important part of the Giant Angora foundation. Their system is very structured, very production-focused, and incredibly disciplined. It’s a different approach, and one worth understanding, even if it’s not the path you choose.

Let’s start with the two that get compared the most.

  • English Angoras are often what people fall in love with first. They’re smaller, softer in appearance, and that wooly face… well, it gets just about everyone. They have a very sweet, gentle presence and truly feel like a traditional pet rabbit in many ways.

But that beautiful face comes with responsibility. Grooming an English Angora takes consistency and commitment. That wool doesn’t take a day off.

  • Giant Angoras, on the other hand, are a completely different experience. They are larger, more substantial rabbits, with a cleaner face and a very intentional design behind them. Giants were developed using German Angoras, with a focus on wool production, while still meeting the American Rabbit Breeders Association Standard of Perfection. That balance is what makes them unique.

Giant Angoras are not just about producing fiber… and they’re not just about appearance. They sit somewhere in between, and that gives them a very distinct purpose in the Angora world.

If your goal is fiber production, Giants really stand out. They produce more volume, more consistency, and they’re built for that kind of work.

But here’s where I want to pause for just a minute. Because choosing the right Angora isn’t about what’s cutest in the moment. It’s about what fits your lifestyle, your goals, and your willingness to learn.

Because all of this information doesn’t matter if the decision is rushed.

Springtime can be the hardest season to make a good, thoughtful choice. Everything feels exciting. Everything looks adorable. And it’s very easy to make a spur-of-the-moment decision.

-Please don’t.

Angoras are not low-maintenance rabbits. They require grooming, planning, and a level of commitment that goes far beyond just bringing one home.

Take your time. Ask questions. Learn what each breed truly needs.

One of the best places to start is with NARBC, the National Angora Rabbit Breeders Club. Their private Mentoring Facebook group is filled with experienced breeders who are willing to share, guide, and help you learn without judgment. It’s a safe place to ask questions and grow your knowledge before making a decision.

And honestly… that kind of support makes all the difference.

I love it as it's free and also has zero advertisements & outside noise that you can get in other groups like Facebook. We also offer free classified ads section.

If you’re still trying to figure out which Angora is right for you, I really encourage you to watch the full video. I walk through each breed in more detail, share my personal experiences, and give you a better feel for what life with each of these rabbits actually looks like.

Because at the end of the day, there isn’t a “best” Angora.

There’s just the one that’s best for you.
