Seeing Wool Differently: Giant Angora Structure Explained

Once you understand this, everything about your rabbits starts to make sense

There’s a moment that happens for every Angora breeder.

At first, you’re just looking at wool. It’s soft, it’s pretty… and honestly, it all kind of looks the same.

But then one day, something shifts.

  • You start to see it differently.

  • You begin to notice structure.

  • Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

When we talk about Giant Angora wool structure, we’re not just talking about length or density.

We’re looking at how the fiber is built.

The balance between underwool and guard hair. The way the coat separates or doesn’t. The texture and integrity of the fiber. How it behaves when you handle it

This is what determines whether a coat is truly functional, not just pretty.

Understanding wool structure impacts everything.

  • Breeding decisions - You start selecting for coats that perform, not just look good.

  • Show success - Structure influences presentation, density, and overall quality.

  • Spinning quality - Not all fiber behaves the same. Structure determines usability.

This is where most people get stuck. Because no one really teaches this part clearly.

It comes from hands-on experience, comparing different coats, and paying attention to how fiber behaves, not just how it looks. And most importantly, giving yourself permission to learn over time.

You don’t have to figure this out alone. This is exactly why I share these videos.

Because understanding wool structure is one of the biggest unlock moments in working with Giant Angoras. And once it clicks, everything else starts to make more sense.

See my Live YouTube, where I dive into it;

This coming weekend I’ll be presenting Giant Angora wool structure to judges at the Ridgefield, Washington rabbit show. This is a big step in helping bring more clarity and consistency to how we evaluate Giant coats. After the presentation, I’ll be recording a full version and sharing it on YouTube, complete with photos of the three fiber types and a deeper, more detailed breakdown than I can cover in a live setting. If you’re serious about learning how to truly evaluate wool, this is one you’re not going to want to miss. Stay tuned!

There are also a few exciting opportunities coming up that I want to make sure you don’t miss.

Enrollment will be opening next week for my “Mastering the Art of Giant Angoras” course, starting May 27th. This will be a four-week live Zoom course where we go deeper into everything from coat evaluation to hands-on techniques and real-world application. If you’ve been wanting more guidance and structure in your learning, this is going to be a really special experience.

Also, Betty Chu currently has a very limited supply of her Northern California Angora Guild Handbooks available. These are an incredible resource, and once this batch is gone, they may not be available again anytime soon. Contact Betty via email; EnglishAngora1@yahoo.com

And finally, if you’d like to support the Broken English Angora COD project, I’ve just released new “Cracking the Code” apparel in my Etsy shop, including t-shirts, long sleeve tees, and hoodies.
