A real-life look at evaluating condition, shearing, and making the right call for your rabbit
There’s a moment every breeder faces.
You’ve got a rabbit you planned to show… and then something feels off.
That was today with Miss Harmony.
She was originally part of my West Coast Classic show string. Beautiful wool, strong lineage, and a daughter of one of my all-time favorites—Sweet Thing. But when I got her back on the table, I could feel it immediately.
She had dropped weight. Her attitude had shifted. And her body condition told me everything I needed to know. So instead of pushing her toward a show… I changed course.
Reading the Rabbit (CnC Matters)
Condition can change fast.
One week they’re thriving… the next, something is off. That’s why frequent hands-on checks matter. Feeling bone structure, watching behavior, and observing appetite can tell you more than anything else.
Harmony was still eating—but not thriving.
That’s your cue.
The Decision: Show or Support
This is where experience comes in.
You can push a rabbit… or you can support it.
Today, I chose support.
Instead of holding her coat for show, I sheared her down to relieve stress on her body and help her reset. Sometimes that’s the best thing you can do for them.
Shearing & Wool Sorting
Harmony’s coat told a story:
• Prime wool: Beautiful structure, soft with correct guard hair balance
• Seconds: Slight staining, still usable for blending or dyeing
• Thirds: Shorter fibers, perfect for felting or nesting
Even in a “non-show” situation, nothing goes to waste.
That’s the beauty of Angoras; every stage has value.
Real Talk: Not Every Rabbit Stays on the Show Path
Miss Harmony may not be a show rabbit right now., and that’s okay.
She’s still:
✔ A valuable fiber producer
✔ A potential breeding doe
✔ One of the happiest, most inquisitive personalities in my barn
Sometimes the best rabbits aren’t the ones on the table—they’re the ones teaching us when to pivot.
What’s Next
• She gets sheared and comfortable
• Extra nutrition and observation (“poop watch” included)
• Possibly a future “date night”
• And her wool? Headed straight into Sinfully Soft yarn
Final Thought
This is what real rabbitry looks like.
Not every day is about winning. Some days are about listening.
And if you listen closely enough… your rabbits will tell you exactly what they need.
